Who hasn’t dreamt of opening up their own restaurant? Creating a menu with all your favorite flavors, stocking the bar with a seasonal selection of craft beer, your favorite wines and designing the atmosphere to reflect your own personal tastes?

It may have taken over two years but friends Nik Alsop, Aileen Garcia and Hazel Delgado made good on their dream by opening Redlands newest restaurant, The Lounge 22, Friday, May 17th. Delgado and Garcia have backgrounds in home health services while Alsop holds both ownership and operational roles with UK International Soccer Camp. Together with their families, Delgado and Alsop have been exploring the food scene of the greater Inland Empire for over a decade. Originally from the Philippines, Garcia lived in LA for 14 years and recently moved to Highland. The three of them, connected by a passion for food and fine dining, decided they wanted a local spot unlike anything else in Redlands.

The restaurant is located at 22 Vine Street, just a few blocks from downtown Redlands bustling State Street. The location places them within a cluster of boutique shops anchored by the historic Fox Theater. This is the third time someone has given the location a shot as a bar or eatery in the last two years. Most recently the space was home to The Wine Lounge and before that it was a South American style Café.

The three have faith that they have brought all the pieces of the puzzle together to make the location a success. Their distinctive concept combines a relaxed and inviting atmosphere and quality French-American cuisine at competitive prices.

The new space is extremely warm and welcoming and no expense was spared to give it this feeling. Renovations are evident in every corner. Walls were removed to expand the restaurant and bar to seat 50. Wall murals, fresh paint, chandeliers, a baby grand piano and French themed art complete the transformation.

The last piece of the puzzle was finding the right chef to bring their vision to reality. In a twist of fates, Chef Jonathon Weiner, who specializes in New American and Northern California style cuisine, had returned to Redlands when this opportunity fell his way. They set up a tasting and within minutes they knew he was exactly what they were looking for.

I have personally been a fan of Wiener’s for a few years now. He prepared some of the most mind-blowing food and wine pairings I have ever tasted. Always sourcing the best ingredients available his dishes showcase remarkable flavors with simple elegance.

Wiener will obtain the majority of his organic produce and humanely raised meat and poultry from local family ranches and farms like Three Sisters, Niman’s and Pitman’s.

Although they anticipate a seasonally rotating menu, The Lounge 22’s owners seek a French influence to tie together the theme of their cuisine. Naturally they offer crepes, but also feature a fantastic rustic baguette sandwich as well as tarts and pot de cremes for desserts. I most enjoyed some of Jonathon’s signature dishes such as a yam soup poured tableside over Greek yogurt and sourdough croutons, Scallop’s served with cauliflower, Bartlett pears and shaved almonds and the Roasted Mary’s chicken with heirloom carrots and house bacon.

(Clockwise from top) The Lounge 22′s country toast with di Stefano burrata and market tomatoes, fried Brussels sprouts with smoked goat cheese and Niman Ranch pork belly with Three Sisters Farms apples and radishes.

Portobello Fries with truffle aioli and Niman Ranch pork belly with apple butter were also among my favorites. The Bello fries transported me back to a fried mushroom sandwich I often ate at a dive bar as a child growing up in Texas. I actually closed my eyes to savor the flavor and recall the memories. The pork belly was some of the finest and richest I have ever tasted and so perfectly complimented by the apple butter and fresh diced apple and radish garnishes. Jonathon’s technique uses minimal ingredients that are thoughtfully incorporated into a dish in as natural a state as possible. This allows each unique flavor to shine rather than become muddled by the others.

Known for finding and pulling herbs considered inedible by most; Jonathon prides himself on cooking with the freshest local ingredients available. Wiener is collaborating with other local chefs as well. Chef Ryan Berk will make special batches of his la minute ice cream for The Lounge 22 and Augies coffee is on the menu as well.

The owners want to make sure when people come to the restaurant they feel relaxed and want to stay a while. They hope the bar, stocked with local craft brews and great wines, as well as certified Sommelier Wilson Turley, will encourage this. Live music on weekends and food and wine tastings should bring in a diverse group of foodies as well. They most definitely have all the ingredients for a successful enterprise and I wish them nothing but success and happiness in the coming years.

Hours of operation are Tuesday through Saturday from 11:30 am -2:30 pm for lunch. Dinner is 5 pm-9 pm with hours extended to 1 am on weekend evenings. They will also offer brunch from 10 am-3 pm on Sunday only.

Stone has completely transformed the former movie theater into a state-of-the-art live entertainment venue that will host concerts, comedy shows, and other guest performances that are scheduled weekly year-round.

The theater will kick off its grand re-opening with a performance by Jim Curry, a John Denver tribute vocalist. Curry and his band are scheduled to rock the house at 7 p.m. on Fri., June 7 and at 7 p.m. on Sat., June 8 at the Cave, located at 40789 Village Drive in Big Bear Lake.

“The upscale theater will be the pinnacle of the community and is sure to become the entertainment venue not just for Big Bear, but the entire region,” said Stone.

The Cave will feature a dance floor, VIP seating, and a concession stand that will serve a wide selection of beer and wine. Starting in June, the theater will host a number of tribute bands that will memorialize such musical legends as: Fleetwood Mac, Elton John, Mötley Crüe, Billy Idol, Metallica, AC/DC, the Beatles, and the Rolling Stones.

Boost Mobile in association with Guerilla Union made the initial announcement of the ROCK THE BELLS 2013 FESTIVAL SERIES on Tuesday, May 14 at the 6th annual Press Conference and Launch Party. Upholding to true Rock the Bells tradition, freestyle champ Supernatural unveiled this year’s performing artists via freestyle, of which include: BIG K.R.I.T., BLACK HIPPY, BODEGA BAMZ, BONE THUGS-N-HARMONY, BROTHER ALI, CHASE & STATUS, COMMON*, CURREN$Y, DANNY BROWN, DILATED PEOPLES, DIZZY WRIGHT, DOM KENNEDY, E40 AND TOO SHORT*, EARL SWEATSHIRT, FLATBUSH ZOMBIES, HIT BOY, HOPSIN, IMMORTALTECHNIQUE, JHENE AIKO*, JUICY J*, JURASSIC 5*, KID CUDI, LECRAE, MIMOSA, PROF, RAKIM, SNOW THA PRODUCT, SUPERNATURAL, TALIB KWELI, TECH N9NE, TYLER THE CREATOR*, and WU-TANG CLAN with more to be announced.

The festival will kick off in the Inland Empire at San Manuel Amphitheater in San Bernardino, California on September 7 and 8. and make its way to Shoreline Amphitheatre in Mountain View, California on September 14 and 15. To round out the tour, Rock the Bells will be establishing new festival sites at RFK Festival Grounds in Washington D.C. on September 28 and 29, and at Meadowlands Racetrack in East Rutherford, New Jersey on October 4 and 5.

Chang Weisberg (owner and founder of Guerilla Union) explains, “For the first time ever, the majority of acts have or will be releasing new music. From Tyler the Creatpr’s Wolf, Kid Cudi’s Indicud to Talib Kweli’s Prisoner of Conscious, Schoolboy Q’s Oxymoron, and Directors of Photography by Dilated Peoples, we have curated a multi-generational line-up that includes the best and brightest artists in the genre. It is not just great Hip Hop music, its great music period. Its a collection of artists who represent, respect, and recognize everything that Rock The Bells 10 has accomplished in its storied history.”

This year marks Rock the Bells’ tenth anniversary, and to celebrate and commemorate the premier hip-hop festival, Weisberg promises fans an once-in-a-lifetime experience. Rock the Bells will have original virtual performances of iconic hip-hop legends Ol’ Dirty Bastard performing with Wu-Tang Clan and Eazy-E performing with Bone Thugs-n-Harmony. Weisberg states: “This is not only a dream come true for the fans, but for me as well. I would have never dreamt of the day, nor the technology, for this to come to fruition. Thanks to Dr. John Acunto and his team at Gig-It, they are going to help bring these two legendary rappers back to life. But, we will set the standard only approved by Cherry Jones and Tomica Wright. This virtual performance is especially important for the legendary New York crew. The first year of Rock the Bells in 2004 was the last major performance all Wu-Tang Clan members had together before Ol’ Dirty Bastards’ untimely passing. Now, 10 years later, they will be reunited on the same stage at Rock the Bells for their 20 year anniversary.

Rock the Bells artist ambassador and famed emcee Nas states: “I’m proud to have been a partner with Rock the Bells for the past five years. This year, RTB X, will mark a significant time in hip hop. Today’s announcement is a celebration of several historic moments in the past, with a keen eye for the future. Today is only the beginning, and the future announcements that Chang and team will make will serve as proof of a genre that is as vibrant and rich as it ever was.”

John Acunto (founder and CEO of GIG-IT) states, “We are honored to be apart of Rock the Bells history-making tenth anniversary, especially with the privilege of bringing back two incredible legends to the stage. Our company has created animation and avatars for over 70 major artists for our game GIG-IT, the largest music game in history. This evening marks a beginning of the way the future was supposed to be. Furthermore, our most sincere and humble thanks to the families for their belief and support of Rock The Bells and GIG-IT.”

There are some people who will wake up on May 25th, and instinctively know someone’s cooking chili. They’ll even find a way to sniff it out. For those of us with less than bionic noses, the 11th Annual Chili Cook-off & Car/Cycle Show takes place on May 25th from 9:30-5pm in Riverside (off of Magnolia between Van Buren & Jackson in Arlington Village).

This event will feature over 100 cars, 50 motorcycles, and over 100 vendors. The streets are, of course, blocked off so you won’t be dodging moving cars as you browse through the wares. Chili cook-off contestants will be set up in the middle of Van Buren and Magnolia near the main stage (in case you want to hit up that area first!)

Before you ask, yes you can bring the kids! A kids area has been set up with bouncy houses, games, and fun food options (in case they don’t like chili!). Again so you don’t forget- May 25th!!!
